Cachoeira
During the Brazilian Empire, Cachoeira
was Bahia’s wealthiest and most
populous town, its original character
still remaining in the houses, churches
and historical buildings. Protected
by the National Institute for Historical
and Artistic Heritage since 1971,
Cachoeira, after Salvador, is the
city that has the most important Baroque
architectural heritage in Bahia. There
is a visit to the Igreja Matriz and
the Ordem Terceira do Carmo.
In São Félix, connected
to Cachoeira by an old colonial bridge
(Ponte Dom Pedro II) over the River
Paraguaçu, we’ll visit
a traditional cigar factory, founded
in 1873.

Mercado
Modelo
In front of the Lacerda Elevator and
beside Baía de Todos os Santos,
Mercado Modelo is a must for visitors
to Salvador. Opened in 1912, it was
initially a food supply depot for
the city of Salvador. It was only
in the 70s that it became a centre
for the crafts and products of Bahia.
Now there are 263 stores that sell
musical instruments, hammocks, wood
engravings, lace, embroidery and ropework,
jewellery and adornments, ornaments
and utensils, plus a number of Afro-Brazilian
cult objects and the famous Senhor
do Bonfim ribbons.
